Summary of research during April 2002 - March 2003
My research during the period of April 2002 to March 2003
has been focussed primarily on the subject of time dependent
solution involving the open string tachyon field. In hep-th/0204143
I showed that the qualitative features of such time dependent
solutions in string theory can be explained with the help of
a simple classical effective action for the tachyon field. In
hep-th/0207105 I developed a general method for constructing
time dependent solutions in open string theory involving multiple
rolling tachyons. In hep-th/0208142 with Partha Mukhopadhyay
I generalised the earlier stringy solutions involving time dependent
tachyon field to include the effect of background electric field.
In hep-th/0209122 I showed how the tachyon field could serve
as a definition of time in quantum cosmology. In hep-th/0303057
I showed that the tachyon effective action which was used earlier
to reproduce the time dependence of the rolling tachyon, can
also be used to explain the construction of BPS D-branes as
kink and vortex solutions in the world-volume theories on a
non-BPS D-brane and a brane-antibrane system respectively.
