The Harish-Chandra Research Institute

Admissions to the graduate programme in mathematics

HRI conducts a regular Ph.D. as well an integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. program in mathematics, in collaboration with the Homi Bhaba National Institute (HBNI). The regular Ph.D. program is open to students with a M.Sc. degree in mathematics, while the integrated program is open to candidates with a bachelors degree in science or engineering. Candidates who wish to apply for this programme need not send in any application to HRI. However, they must apply for the Ph.D. Scholarships of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) and appear for that screening test. The advertisement of the NBHM Ph.D. Scholarships Examination is expected to appear in the national newspapers in the last quarter of each year. HRI will directly get the test scores and copies of the applications from the NBHM and will independently send call letters for interview to successful candidates.

For more information on the NBHM Ph. D. Scholarships Examination, including the advertisement and sample question papers, please see the NBHM Web site.

Anyone having a UGC-CSIR Research Fellowship for the current year, can apply for appearing at the HRI admissions interview, by writing to <math[at]>, with a copy to <mathjest[at]>.

Please note that the cut-off for the interview in 2018 is 22 marks in the NBHM Ph. D.  Scholarships Examination, and AIR 22 in the UGC-CSIR Examination.
