Admission (Doctoral Programme in Mathematics)
Admission procedure
The admission process includes a national-based written test followed by an interview:
- National-Based Written Test:
- NBHM Window: Harish-Chandra Research Institute uses the national level NBHM Scholarship Written Test as a preliminary screening test for the selection. To apply for the HRI Mathematics Ph.D. programme, candidates must score above a cut-off point determined by HRI. The NBHM Exam normally takes place during the month of January. - CSIR-UGC Window: Candidates who have qualified the CSIR UGC NET (JRF) exam in December 2024, July 2025, or December 2025 (provided the results are announced before 15 March 2026) with a Mathematics rank less than or equal to 50 are eligible to apply.
- Interview:
- The eligible applicants will be called for an online interview, conducted over Zoom. The interview schedule will be announced, and emails will be sent to eligible applicants well in advance.
- The application period, followed by online interviews, is typically completed within the month of April.
- Selection:
- Following the completion of the interviews, the final list of selected candidates will be made public on the HRI website by the end of April.
- The selected candidates are expected to produce the hard copy of the relevant documents showing that they have the required eligibility, at the time of joining.
Academic eligibility
To be eligible for the Ph.D. programme at HRI, one must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Candidates must have one of the following degrees:
- BS+ (4-years/8-semesters Bachelor’s degree in Science, including 1-year research)
- M.Sc. / M.Tech. / M.Phil. or equivalent
- Candidates must meet the following grade criteria:
- The qualifying degree must be from a recognized university/institute with at least 55% aggregate marks or an equivalent grade (as per the grading system).
- For candidates with an equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution, guidelines issued by the appropriate statutory authority of India will apply.
- In the case of a 4-year BS (Research) degree, a minimum of 75% aggregate marks (or equivalent grade) is required.
