Admissions to the M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in physics


We shall have the M.Sc. selection examination on May 19, 2024. We shall have the Ph.D. selection examination on May 10–12, 2024 (round 1), and May 31, 2024 to June 2, 2024 (round 2). All examinations will be held in the offline mode at HRI, Prayagraj.


HRI conducts an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. program in physics. The M.Sc. program is open to students with a Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering, while the Ph.D. program is open to students with an M.Sc. degree in physics or four year B.S. degree. Candidates for these programs will be selected through the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST), or students who have qualified the joint CSIR-UGC NET in June 2023 or December 2023. Cutoff for both categories of candidates this year are given below.

Admissions to the M.Sc. and the Ph.D. programs - 2024

Appearing for the examination

For the M.Sc. program in Physics at HRI, candidates with rank up to 293 (i.e., percentile 91.06 and above) in JEST 2024 are eligible to appear for the written examination. The selection will be done solely based on the performance in the written examination. Students seeking admission to the M.Sc. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the bachelors degree level.

Students admitted to the M.Sc. program in Physics at HRI would be eligible to appear for the examination for admission to the Integrated Ph.D. program at HRI, on completion of the first year M.Sc., provided they have CGPA of 7 or above and have passed all the courses of the first year M.Sc. program.

For Ph.D. program in HRI, candidates with rank up to 199 (i.e., percentile 96.02 and above) in JEST 2024 are eligible to appear for the written test and interview. Those who are seeking admission to the Ph.D. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the masters degree level or at least 75% aggregate marks in the four year B.S. program.

Students who have qualified the NET examinations held in June 2023 or December, 2023 and have become eligible for a CSIR-UGC JRF fellowship in Physics, with rank up to 199, are also eligible to attend the written test and interview for admission to the Ph.D. program in physics at HRI.

The selection of students for the Ph.D. program will be done solely based on the performance in the written test and the interview.

Students pursuing M.Sc. program at HRI and who have not cleared the above mentioned cut off in JEST or NET and will be completing their M.Sc. in the academic year 2023-2024 are also eligible to attend the written test and interview. But they must have CGPA 7.5 or higher on the completion of the masters program to get admitted to the Ph.D. program. However, those HRI M.Sc. students who meet any of the cut offs are also eligible. They must have CGPA 6.0 or higher on the completion of the masters program to get admitted to the Ph.D. program.

Please confirm your participation latest by April 15, 2024 by sending an email to physjest(AT)hri.res.in with a copy of marksheet of JEST or NET examination. Candidates for Ph.D. admissions should also mention their preference (round 1/round 2) in the email. While we shall try to accommodate your request, we cannot guarantee you will get your preferred choice of dates.

List of candidates appearing for the examination shall be announced on the HRI website by April 19, 2024.

For both M.Sc. and Ph.D. entrance examinations, the written examination will be held from 9:30 am to 12:00 noon. The candidate must report at the HRI reception no later than 8:30 am on the day of the examination. The candidates must bring one photo identity (Aadhar/PAN/Driving Licence) and a copy of the JEST/NET marksheet.
