Admissions to the I.Ph.D., M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in physics


HRI conducts I.Ph.D., M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in physics. The I.Ph.D. and M.Sc. programs are open to students with a Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering, while the Ph.D. program is open to students with an M.Sc. degree in physics or four year B.S. degree. Candidates for these programs will be selected through GATE 2025, JEST 2025, or students who have qualified the joint CSIR-UGC NET in July 2024 or March 2025. Cutoff for all categories of candidates this year are given below.

Admissions to I.Ph.D., M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs - 2025

Round-1

Selection for I.Ph.D. and Ph.D. programs

Dates: May 19, 20, 21, 2025

Venue: Harish-Chandra Research Institute

There will be a written examination in the first half of May 19, followed by interviews.

Round-2

Selection for I.Ph.D. and Ph.D. programs

Dates: July 14, 15, 16, 2025

Venue: Harish-Chandra Research Institute

There will be a written examination in the first half of July 14, followed by interviews.

Selection for M.Sc. program

Date: July 13, 2025

Venue: To be announced.

There will be a written examination on July 13.


For the M.Sc. program in physics, candidates with rank up to 300 in GATE 2025 or JEST 2025 are eligible to appear for the written examination. The selection will be done solely based on the performance in the written examination. Students seeking admission to the M.Sc. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the bachelors degree level.

All updated information regarding venues will be available on the webpage soon. No emails will be entertained prior to this announcement.


For I.Ph.D. and Ph.D. programs, candidates with rank up to 200 in GATE 2025 or JEST 2025 are eligible to appear for the written test and interview. Those who are seeking admission to the Ph.D. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the masters degree level or at least 75% aggregate marks in the four year B.S. program. Students seeking admission to the I.Ph.D. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the bachelors degree level.

Students who have qualified the NET examinations held in July 2024 or March 2025 and have become eligible for a CSIR-UGC JRF fellowship in physics, with rank up to 200, are also eligible to attend the written test and interview for admission to the Ph.D. program in physics. Students seeking admission to the Ph.D. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the masters degree level.

The selection of students for the I.Ph.D. and Ph.D. programs will be done solely based on the performance in the written test and the interview.


Students admitted to the M.Sc. program in physics at HRI would be eligible to appear for the examination for admission to the I.Ph.D. program, on completion of the first year M.Sc., provided they have CGPA of 7 or above and have passed all the courses of the first year M.Sc. program.

Students pursuing M.Sc. program at HRI and who have not cleared the above mentioned cut off in GATE, JEST or NET and will be completing their M.Sc. in the academic year 2024-2025 are also eligible to attend the written test and interview. But they must have CGPA 7 or higher on the completion of the masters program to get admitted to the Ph.D. program. However, those HRI M.Sc. students who meet any of the cut offs are also eligible. They must have CGPA 6.0 or higher on the completion of the masters program to get admitted to the Ph.D. program.


All I.Ph.D. and Ph.D. candidates: Please confirm your participation by sending an email to physjest(AT)hri.res.in with a copy of marksheet of GATE/JEST or NET examination. Candidates for I.Ph.D. and Ph.D. admissions should also mention their preference (round 1/round 2) in the email. While we shall try to accommodate your request, we cannot guarantee you will get your preferred choice of dates.

Round-1: Candidates must confirm participation latest by May 5, 2025. List of candidates appearing for the examination shall be announced on the HRI website by May 12, 2025.

Round-2: Candidates must confirm participation latest by June 30, 2025. List of candidates appearing for the examination shall be announced on the HRI website by July 7, 2025.

The candidate must report at the HRI reception no later than 8:30 am on the day of the examination. The candidates must bring one photo identity (Aadhar/PAN/Driving Licence) and a copy of the GATE/JEST/NET marksheet.
