Admissions to the I.Ph.D., M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in physics


HRI conducts I.Ph.D., M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in physics. The I.Ph.D. and M.Sc. programs are open to students with a Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering, while the Ph.D. program is open to students with an M.Sc. degree in physics or four year B.S. degree. Candidates for these programs will be selected through Joint Entrance Screening Test, JEST 2025 and JEST 2026, or students who have qualified the joint CSIR-UGC NET in June 2025 or December 2025. Cutoff for all categories of candidates this year are given below.

Online interview for shortlisted candidates.


For the M.Sc. and I.Ph.D. programs in physics, candidates who have qualified in JEST 2025 or JEST 2026 are eligible to apply. Students seeking admission to the programs should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the bachelors degree level.

The selection of students for the programs will be done solely based on the performance in the interview. Shortlisting of candidates for the online interview will be based on the submitted application materials.


For the Ph.D. program, candidates with rank up to 400 JEST 2025 or JEST 2026 are eligible to apply. Those who are seeking admission to the Ph.D. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the masters degree level or at least 75% aggregate marks in the four year B.S. program.

Students who have qualified the NET examinations held in June 2025 or December 2025 and have become eligible for a CSIR-UGC JRF fellowship in physics, with rank up to 400, are also eligible to apply. Students seeking admission to the Ph.D. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the masters degree level or at least 75% aggregate marks in the four year B.S. program.

The selection of students for the Ph.D. program will be done solely based on the performance in the interview. Shortlisting of candidates for the online interview will be based on the submitted application materials.


Students admitted to the M.Sc. program in physics at HRI would be eligible to apply for admission to the I.Ph.D. program, on completion of the first year M.Sc., provided they have CGPA of 7.5 or above and have passed all the courses of the first year M.Sc. program.

Students pursuing M.Sc. program at HRI and who have not cleared the above mentioned cut off in JEST or NET and will be completing their M.Sc. in the academic year 2025-2026 are also eligible to apply. But they must have CGPA 7 or higher on the completion of the masters program at the time of admission to the Ph.D. program.
