Admissions to the M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in physics


HRI conducts an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. program in physics. The M.Sc. program is open to students with a Bachelor's degree in science or engineering, while the Ph.D. program is open to students with an M.Sc. degree in physics. Candidates for these programs will be selected through the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) , followed by an interview. In addition, students who have qualified the National Eligibility Test (NET) under the CSIR - UGC JRF category in June or December 2019 would be considered for the interview. Cutoff for both categories of candidates this year are given below. Students who expect to complete their final examination by August are eligible for these programs.

Admissions to the M.Sc. and the Ph.D. programs - 2020

Appearing for the interview

For the M.Sc. program in Physics at HRI, candidates with rank up to 151 (i.e., percentile 97.59 and above) in JEST 2020 are eligible to appear for the interview. Students seeking admission to the M.Sc. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the bachelors degree level.

Students admitted to the M.Sc. program in Physics at HRI would be eligible to appear for the interview for admission to the Integrated Ph.D. program at HRI, on completion of the first year M.Sc., provided they have CGPA of 7 or above and have passed all the courses of the first year M.Sc. program.

For PhD program in HRI, candidates with rank up to 101 (i.e., percentile 98.62 and above) in JEST 2020 are eligible to appear for the interview. Those who are seeking admission to the Ph. D. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the masters and at least 55% aggregate marks at the bachelors degree level.

Students who have qualified the NET examinations held during 2019 (i.e., either June 2019 or December 2019) and have become eligible for a CSIR - UGC JRF fellowship in Physics, with rank up to 101, are also eligible to attend the interview for admission to the Ph.D. program in physics at HRI.

Students pursuing M.Sc. program at HRI, who have CGPA 6 or higher, and will be completing their M.Sc. in the academic year 2019-20 are also eligible to attend the interview.

Selection for the M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs will be based on an interview that each candidate has to appear for. The candidate has the option to either appear for the interview online using video-conferencing tools, or come to HRI physically for the interview.

For candidates appearing online using video-conferencing tools

The interviews will be held in two rounds. The first round will be held on 6, 7 and, 8 July. The second round will be held on 13, 14, and 15 July. You can opt for an interview slot in one of these rounds.

Please confirm your participation latest by 20 June by sending an email to physjest(AT)hri.res.in, mentioning which round you would like to be interviewed in. While we shall try to accommodate your request regarding the interview round, there is no guarantee that you shall be assigned to that round. When you write to physjest(AT)hri.res.in, please send an email id (this must be a gmail id) and phone number where you can be contacted. JEST qualified students should send their JEST rank, whereas CSIR - UGC NET qualified students should send the soft copy of their result indicating the rank secured by them.

List of candidates for the interview shall be announced on the HRI website by 26 June. All relevant information regarding the interview will be emailed to you by that date.

Due to the prevailing pandemic, the date for the interview to be held in HRI will be announced at an appropriate time. All relevant information regarding the interview will be emailed to you.

Classes for all the candidates who are selected and who wish to join HRI will start on the same day. The date will be declared at an appropriate time.
