Admissions to the M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in physics


We shall have the M.Sc. and Ph.D. selection interviews on August 23, 24, 26, and 27, 2021 in the online mode.


HRI conducts an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. program in physics. The M.Sc. program is open to students with a Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering, while the Ph.D. program is open to students with an M.Sc. degree in physics. Candidates for these programs will be selected through the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) , followed by an interview. In addition, students who have qualified the National Eligibility Test (NET) under the CSIR - UGC JRF category held on November 19, 21, and 26, 2020 would be considered for the interview. Cutoff for both categories of candidates this year are given below.

Admissions to the M.Sc. and the Ph.D. programs - 2021

Appearing for the interview

For the M.Sc. program in Physics at HRI, candidates with rank up to 200 (i.e., percentile 93.80 and above) in JEST 2021 are eligible to appear for the interview. Students seeking admission to the M.Sc. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the bachelors degree level.

Students admitted to the M.Sc. program in Physics at HRI would be eligible to appear for the interview for admission to the Integrated Ph.D. program at HRI, on completion of the first year M.Sc., provided they have CGPA of 7 or above and have passed all the courses of the first year M.Sc. program.

For PhD program in HRI, candidates with rank up to 102 (i.e., percentile 98.02 and above) in JEST 2021 are eligible to appear for the interview. Those who are seeking admission to the Ph. D. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the masters degree level.

Students who have qualified the NET examinations held on November 19, 21, and 26, 2020 and have become eligible for a CSIR - UGC JRF fellowship in Physics, with rank up to 102, are also eligible to attend the interview for admission to the Ph.D. program in physics at HRI.

Students pursuing M.Sc. program at HRI, who have CGPA 6 or higher, and will be completing their M.Sc. in the academic year 2020-2021 are also eligible to attend the interview.

Selection for the M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs will be based on an online interview using video conferencing tools, that each candidate has to appear for. The interviews will be held on August 23, 24, 26, and 27, 2021.

When you write to physjest(AT)hri.res.in, please send an email id (this must be a gmail id) and phone number where you can be contacted. JEST qualified students should send their JEST rank, whereas CSIR - UGC NET qualified students should send the soft copy of their result indicating the rank secured by them.

List of candidates for the interview shall be announced on the HRI website by 21 August. All relevant information regarding the interview will be emailed to you by that date.
