Admissions to the graduate programs in physics

HRI will be starting a new M.Sc. program in physics from 2017, along with the existing Ph.D. program in physics. HRI will not be admitting new students to the integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. program anymore.

The Ph.D. program is open to students with an M.Sc. degree in physics, while the M.Sc. program is open to candidates with a Bachelor's degree in science or engineering. For further details about the graduate programs in physics at HRI, click here.

Candidates for these programs will be selected through the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) , followed by a written test and an interview at HRI. In addition, students who have qualified the NATIONAL ELIGIBILITY TEST (NET) under the CSIR - UGC JRF category in June or December 2015 would be considered for the written test and interview at HRI. Cutoff for both categories of candidates this year are given below. Students who expect to complete their final examination by August are eligible for these programs. Candidates should have at least 60% in their bachelor's or master's examination to appear for the written test and interview at HRI. Please bring the relevant mark sheet/certificate with you.

Admissions to the regular Ph.D. and the integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programs - 2016

Appearing for the written test and interview

For regular PhD program in HRI, candidates with rank up to 79 (i.e percentile 98.56 and above) in JEST 2016 are eligible to attend the written test and interview. For the Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. program in Physics at HRI, candidates with rank up to 82 (i.e percentile 98.05 and above) in JEST 2016 are eligible to attend the written test and interview.

Students who have qualified the NET examinations held during 2015 (i.e., either June 2015 or December 2015) and have become eligible for a CSIR - UGC JRF fellowship in Physics, with rank within 80, are also eligible to attend the written test and interview for admission to the Ph.D./Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programs in physics at HRI. CSIR-UGC JFR qualified candidates are expected to write to us (by email) mentioning their NET Roll Numbers. Please carry a proof of qualifying the NET when you come to attend the interviews.

The interviews will be held in two rounds, first during April 29--May 1 and again during May 20-22. The eligible candidates can choose to attend either round of interview, based on their convenience. If you are eligible, we would suggest that you go ahead and make the travel plans to attend the interview. Please ensure you arrive at HRI by 9 AM on April 29 or May 20 for the written test and carry a photo ID with you. We will be paying you train fare by AC-3 for attending the interview. We do not have space to accommodate candidates on campus. However, we will make all efforts to accommodate female candidates coming alone, or candidates who are physically challenged. Others should make arrangements for their own stay in Allahabad. We would request you to confirm your participation in the interviews (mentioning which round you will come for) by sending an e-mail to physjest[at]

You must bring your mark-sheets/grade cards when you attend the test and interview.
