Admission

Can I reschedule my interview if it clashes with another institute's interview, travel arrangements, or university exams?

We understand that applicants may face scheduling conflicts due to overlapping interviews at other institutions, unavoidable travel, or upcoming university semester exams.

If your scheduled interview time poses a genuine conflict, please contact the admissions office via email as soon as possible. When requesting a reschedule, ensure you include:

  • Your application/registration number.
  • The exact date and time of your currently scheduled interview.
  • A brief explanation of the conflict (e.g., train travel for another offline interview, university exams).
  • A window of alternative dates and times you are available to attend the interview.

Note: While we try our best to accommodate reasonable requests and offer an alternate time slot within the interview period, rescheduling is subject to panel availability and cannot be guaranteed.

The NBHM has already announced its results. When will the institute announce its separate cut-off for NBHM applicants?

Although the NBHM results have been announced, the institute uses the NBHM written test strictly as a preliminary screening tool. The institute determines its own specific cut-off for shortlisting candidates for interviews. The list of eligible candidates will be published on the admissions page as soon as it is finalized. Please continue to check the website for updates.

My JRF scorecard from an earlier session is still technically valid for fellowship activation. Can I apply through the NET-JRF channel if the website asks for a more recent exam date/sessions?

No. For any admission cycle, applicants must strictly adhere to the examination windows specified on the admissions page. Additionally, applicants must meet the specific rank criteria. Even if an older JRF scorecard is still valid, it cannot be used to meet the screening criteria for that particular year's admission cycle unless mentioned on the website.

What are the important academic formalities that need to be completed immediately after joining?

On the day of joining, you will need to complete your registration and submit self-attested copies of your previous academic degrees along with other documentation. A detailed list of required documentation will be communicated to you in your offer letter.

First Year Coursework

How much time do students usually have between the end of coursework and the OGCE?

Examinations generally take place in May. The Oral General Comprehensive Examination (OGCE) typically follows after a study break of a few months and is usually conducted towards the end of July or the beginning of August.

Are we required to submit an Annual Progress Report at the end of our first year?

Yes, please contact HBNI cell for further guidance.

Later Years

What is the Mathematics Academic Committee? and what is its role, and how does it differ from the Doctoral Committee?

In the context of the institute's academic programmes, the Mathematics Academic Committee handles the admission process, assigns teaching duties, and monitors the progress of students during the coursework phase of the programme. It acts as the monitoring committee until the student registers with an advisor. Upon successful completion of the OGCE, a student may register with a faculty member as an advisor. The faculty member, in consultation with the Mathematics Academic Committee, constitutes a Doctoral Committee for the student. From this point forward, the Doctoral Committee acts as the monitoring committee for the student.
