Highlights of the Programme
As a Constituent Institution (CI) of the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), HRI conducts an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. programme in mathematics.
The M.Sc. course curriculum is designed to be research-oriented, with a blend of mandatory and optional courses. Students are expected to complete a Master's Thesis under faculty supervision in the fourth semester of the programme.

Admission Process
The admission process has two stages: the national-level NBHM Scholarship Written Test, followed by a written test conducted by HRI.

NBHM Scholarship Written Test
HRI uses the national-level NBHM Scholarship Written Test as a preliminary screening test. To apply for the HRI Mathematics M.Sc. programme, candidates must score above a cut-off determined by HRI.
The NBHM examination normally takes place during January.

Written Test by HRI
- Shortlisting based on NBHM results: A list of candidates who clear the NBHM test will be posted on the HRI website.
- Shortlisted candidates may apply to the M.Sc. programme to be eligible for the written test conducted at HRI.

Academic Eligibility Criteria
- Qualifying degree
- A candidate must hold one of the following from a recognized university or institute: B.Sc. (3-year/6-semester), B.Tech./B.E. (4-year/8-semester), or B.S. (4-year/8-semester).
- Minimum marks
- At least 55% aggregate marks or an equivalent grade.
- Foreign degrees
- Eligibility for candidates with equivalent foreign degrees will be determined according to the guidelines of the appropriate statutory authority.
Written Test at HRI
The HRI written test covers the following areas:
- Group theory
- Linear algebra
- Real analysis
- Riemann integration
- Point-set topology
- Metric spaces
The test includes both objective (MCQ) and descriptive questions.
