Admissions to the M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in physics

We shall have the M.Sc. and Ph.D. selection interviews on June 13, 14, 16, and 17, 2022 in the online mode.

HRI conducts an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. program in physics. The M.Sc. program is open to students with a Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering, while the Ph.D. program is open to students with an M.Sc. degree in physics. For further details about the graduate programs in physics at HRI, click on the links given above.

Candidates for these programs will be selected through the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) , followed by an interview. In addition, students who have qualified the Joint CSIR - UGC NET June 2021 examination would be considered for the interview. Cutoff for both categories of candidates this year are given below.

Appearing for the interview

For the M.Sc. program in Physics at HRI, candidates with rank up to 200 (i.e., percentile 95.01 and above) in JEST 2022 are eligible to appear for the interview. Students seeking admission to the M.Sc. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the bachelors degree level.

Students admitted to the M.Sc. program in Physics at HRI would be eligible to appear for the interview for admission to the Integrated Ph.D. program at HRI, on completion of the first year M.Sc., provided they have CGPA of 7 or above and have passed all the courses of the first year M.Sc. program.

For PhD program in HRI, candidates with rank up to 108 (i.e., percentile 97.88 and above) in JEST 2022 are eligible to appear for the interview. Those who are seeking admission to the Ph. D. program should have at least 60% aggregate marks at the masters degree level.

Students who have qualified the Joint CSIR - UGC Net June 2021 examination and have become eligible for a CSIR - UGC JRF fellowship in Physics, with rank up to 108, are also eligible to attend the interview for admission to the Ph.D. program in physics at HRI.

Students pursuing M.Sc. program at HRI, who have CGPA 6 or higher, and will be completing their M.Sc. in the academic year 2021-2022 are also eligible to attend the interview.

Selection for the M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs will be based on an online interview using video conferencing tools, that each candidate has to appear for. The interviews will be held on June 13, 14, 16, and 17, 2022.

Please confirm your participation latest by May 13, 2022 by sending an email to physjest(AT)hri.res.in. When you write to physjest(AT)hri.res.in, please send an email id (this must be a gmail id) and phone number where you can be contacted. JEST qualified students should send their JEST rank, whereas CSIR - UGC NET qualified students should send the soft copy of their result indicating the rank secured by them.

List of candidates for the interview shall be announced on the HRI website by 27 May. All relevant information regarding the interview will be emailed to you by that date.

The selected PhD students who shall join HRI can join various research groups after successfully completing their coursework and passing the Oral General Comprehensive Examination. The maximum number of openings for the various groups are

Astrophysics: 2

Condensed Matter Physics: 3

High Energy Physics: 5

Quantum Information and Computation: 6

String Theory: 2

Please note this is an upper bound, and it is not guaranteed that every group will saturate the bound.
